Great news Airshow fans – Ellington will be “attacked” by the 122d Fighter Squadron on October 9-10, 2021. On Saturday, October 9th, three F-15C Eagles out of New Orleans will be flying over the Texas A&M and Alabama football game (Gig ‘Em Aggies! … or whoever you prefer :)), and then turning around to attack Ellington Field at this year’s airshow. Although the football game is only on Saturday, the 122d Fighter Squadron will be back Sunday for a repeat performance at Ellington before heading home to New Orleans. Add another fighter jet to the lineup for 2021! Who is excited!?

About the 122d Fighter Squadron – The “Bayou Militia”

The 122d Fighter Squadron is a unit of the Louisiana Air National Guard 159th Fighter Wing located at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, Louisiana. The 122d is equipped with the F-15C/D Eagle.

The squadron is a descendant organization of the 122d Observation Squadron, established on 30 July 1940. It is one of the 29 original National Guard Observation Squadrons of the United States Army National Guard formed before World War II.

The 122nd Observation Squadron, was formed in December 1940 at the New Orleans Municipal Airport, (currently known as Lakefront Airport). Two months later, with an assortment of 0-38s, O-46s, 0-47s, O-49s and BC-1As to fly, the unit was called to active service at Esler Field in Alexandria, LA, in response to a general military call-up following the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

122d FW Bayou MIlitiaAbout the McDonnell Douglas F-15 “Eagle”

“The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is an American twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft designed by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing). Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas’s design in 1969 to meet the service’s need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. The Eagle first flew in July 1972, and entered service in 1976. It is among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat.”

“The F-15 was originally envisioned as a pure air-superiority aircraft. Its design included a secondary ground-attack capability that was largely unused. The aircraft design proved flexible enough that an improved all-weather strike derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was later developed, entered service in 1989 and has been exported to several nations. As of 2021, the aircraft is being produced in several variants.”
