History comes to Houston: The only two flying B-29’s in the world will be at this year’s Wings Over Houston Airshow

B-29 Superfortresses “FIfI” and “Doc” are coming to Wings Over Houston in 2025 for a major WWII tribute. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

We are thrilled to announce to you that the only two airworthy B-29 Superfortress aircraft in the world will be coming to the Wings Over Houston Airshow October 18th and 19th! From the great World War, to the Korean air war, into the 1960’s, to the Mojave Desert – this airplane has stories to tell. You will be able to touch, feel, and tour these extremely rare warbirds. And you may just see them fly too! This is an incredibly unique opportunity that most Airshows do not receive the chance. To have them both in the same place is a really rare experience.

Celebrating 80 years of the end of WWII – A look at VJ Day and why the B-29 Superfortress played such a major role:

This year at WOH we are highlighting (and flying!) the 80th anniversary of WWII. This Airshow, after all, was founded by the Commemorative Air Force whose intent was to honor, inspire and educate the masses about what the airplanes (and the men and women who flew them) of WWII did to secure our freedom.

The end of WWII was celebrated on different continents at different times. The first victory took place in Europe, know as VE Day. We will highlight VE Day in more emails, and we certainly plan on bringing historic aircraft from the European WWII flying days.

But today, we want to focus on VJ Day (also known as VP Day)… Victory in the Pacific and Victory over Japan. This victory of the war is the reason for bringing these two in credibly historic airplanes to WOH. Fun fact: the B-29 never flew in combat in Europe during WWII. But it was one of the most successful, significant (and controversial) airplanes in the Pacific theater, particularly in the defeat of Japan. Stay tuned for more V-J Day info in August.

About B-29 Superfortress “FIFI”

FIFI was acquired by the CAF in the early 1970s when a group of CAF members found her at the U.S. Navy Proving Ground at China Lake, California where she was being used as a missile target. The airplane was rescued and restored and flew for over thirty years until 2006 when the chief pilot made the decision to ground her pending a complete power plant re-fit. What followed was an extensive four year restoration that included replacing all four engines with new custom built hybrid engines. FIFI returned to the sky in 2010 and since that time has traveled coast to coast attracting large crowds at every tour stop.

About B-29 Superfortress “Doc”

“Doc” is a B-29 Superfortress and one of 1,644 manufactured in Wichita during World War II. Since 1987 when Tony Mazzolini found “Doc” sitting and rotting away in the Mojave Desert, plans have been in the works to restore the historic warbird to flying status to serve as a flying museum.

Over the past 15+ years, hundreds of volunteers have worked on “Doc” and the restoration project. Skilled workers and retirees from Wichita’s aviation industry, veterans, active duty military and others wanting to honor those who served, have spent tens of thousands of hours on Doc’s restoration.
